Title of Speech: What is “balanced tourism growth”? Climate, society and policy in “just” transitions
Tazim Jamal is a Professor in the Department of Recreation, Park and Tourism Sciences at Texas A&M University, Texas, USA. Her research interests lie in sustainable tourism development, multi-stakeholder collaboration and participatory tourism planning and cultural heritage management. Of increasing concern is climate change and the need for sustainable destination management. The undergraduate and graduate courses she facilitates address theoretical, applied and methodological issues in tourism development management and marketing, tourism impacts and heritage tourism. She serves on Master’s and PhD graduate committees within and external to the department, participates on a wide range of journal editorial boards, and has published extensively. She is the author of Justice and Ethics in Tourism (published in Feb. 2019, by Routledge), co-editor of The SAGE Handbook of Tourism Studies (2009), as well as an Associate Editor of the Encyclopedia of Tourism, 2nd ed.

Title of Speech: Portugal’s Tourism Strategy 2027: A road to a sustainable future
Nuno Farenda holds a PhD in Regional and Urban Planning (in the field of Tourism) from the Higher Technical Institute, Lisbon, and a Master of Science in Management and Environmental Policies from the University of Aveiro. With several years of professional experience in the tourism field, Nuno Fazenda was Expert-Coordinator at the North Portugal Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDRN-N) with responsibility for the Action Plan for Tourism in the North of Portugal, and technical coordinator of the Tourism Development Plan for the Douro Valley 2007-2013. In the past, he was also Managing Director of two hotels. He participated in the High-Level Group of the United Nations Foundation (Washington DC) for the international project “Criteria for Sustainable Tourism”, lectured as an invited professor in the Business School of George Washington University and has several communications in Portugal and abroad, namely Europe, Brazil, China, Mexico and the United States. Nowadays, he is the Director of the Portuguese Tourism Strategy Department at Turismo de Portugal (Ministry of Economy), responsible for the technical coordination of the national tourism strategy – Tourism Strategy 2027. He is also Professor at Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Portugal), member of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences of the UCP and international expert of the World Excellence for Destinations Center.
